Mental Engineering's vision is an America where
commercial speech and the techniques of media persuasion are balanced by public
awareness; where every citizen has both the ability and inclination to ask good
questions. Mental Engineering
promotes a healthy society by supporting citizens in their exploration and
understanding of the media messages embedded in commercials and aimed directly
at each one of us. Our mission has been influenced by Paul Tillich who said, “The world
as it is is power; the world as it should be is love. The meaningful life brings power and
love face to face.” On Mental Engineering, power is demonstrated in each of the television commercials we examine. Love is demonstrated by our conversation about them. We promote a constructive and entertaining conversation about commercials and our American culture. The show is neither pro-consumer nor anti-commercial. Rather, we invite our viewers to transcend consumerism and think about themselves as citizens and even spiritual beings.
